According to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), such a community “uses resources wisely and sustainably, fosters a shared vision, brings people together to work toward long-lasting solutions, and considers future generations when making decisions today.”

Sustainability provides many benefits to a community, including lower capital and operating costs, improved public and environmental health, improved quality of life for residents, preservation of property values, and coordinated decision-making between local, State, and Federal governments. For these reasons and others, the Office of Sustainability is committed to being a resource, an advocate, and a catalyst for environmental education, recycling and solid waste management, litter abatement, stormwater management, energy efficiency, biodiversity, permaculture, habitat protection, conservation of natural resources, and water/soil/air quality.
