What is CEDRON?

CEDRON is the acronym for Galloway Township’s Community Emergency/Disaster Radio Operations Network.  The system operates on the General Mobile Radio System (GMRS) and may be utilized by FCC (Federal Communications Commission) licensed members of the general public during an emergency or disaster situation.  

What is the purpose of CEDRON?

In an emergency/disaster situation such as a hurricane, earthquake, or cyberattack, cellular and landline phone systems may become inoperable.  In addition, even if phones are still operational, the 9-1-1 system may become overwhelmed.  The CEDRON system allows local residents and managers of critical infrastructure (healthcare facilities, non-government organizations, utilities, schools, businesses) the ability to call for emergency assistance or report hazardous conditions to our Emergency Operations Center (EOC) by utilizing a two-way radio.  The EOC can then forward these requests to the appropriate agency (police, fire, EMS, DPW, or utility companies).  In addition, OEM can broadcast important information on evacuations, shelter locations, and other critical information which you can share with your family, friends, and coworkers.

Similar systems have become invaluable throughout the country.  In California, GMRS systems are utilized to keep residents informed of evacuation orders when wildfires damage cell towers and landlines.  In Long Island, NY, residents have implemented their own GMRS system to prepare for disasters after Hurricane Sandy damaged their phone systems making communications difficult or impossible.

Who is eligible for CEDRON access?

Access is given to individuals who obtain a GMRS license, purchase their own GMRS radio, agree to attend a 1-hour training session, and meet one of the following criteria:

• First Responder or Government Official
• Manager of Critical Infrastructure (healthcare, NGO’s, utilities, schools, businesses)
• Galloway resident who agrees to function as a Sector Observer in their neighborhood
• National Weather Service SKYWARN observers

How do I obtain my GMRS license?

A GMRS license is $35 and needs to be renewed every 10 years.  The application process is generally quick, and you should have a license within 1-2 business days.  Here is a useful link to applying for a GMRS license that you can copy and paste in your browser:

How do I obtain a GMRS radio?

GMRS radios are available from businesses such as Amazon or Buy Two Way Radios.  A portable handheld radio will generally have good coverage throughout the Township and is easy to set up. There are many options available and OEM does not require the purchase of a specific GMRS radio. 

OEM has tested numerous different models and found that the Wouxun KG-805G portable radio works well on our system and is an affordable option at $80.  An optional Melowave Bandit antenna costs $18 and improves performance in more rural areas. Here are links to these two products that you can copy and paste in your browser:

Mobile radios are also available for your vehicle or for use as a home base station.  These radios are more powerful, offering better transmit power and better reception in more rural areas or while on the move.  However, mobile radios are more expensive and more complicated to install for those without radio knowledge.

Once you have been approved to access CEDRON, OEM will invite you to a 1-hour training session.  We will also assist you in programming your GMRS radio to work on the system.
