New State Law Changes How Public Notices Are Published
The State of New Jersey has enacted P.L. 2025, c. 72, which updates the requirements for how municipalities and other local government entities publish official public notices.
Beginning January 1, 2026, municipalities, counties, boards of education, and special districts must publish public notices twice per month through December 31, 2026. These notices must include a direct link to the municipality’s official webpage where legal notices are posted. The published notice must also state that the complete text of each legal notice may be obtained or viewed on the public entity’s official website and provide the appropriate hyperlink.
Starting March 1, 2026, local governments are required to publish all legal notices on their official websites. While municipalities may continue to use print or online newspapers if they choose, website publication is mandatory. If a municipality uses an online news publication, it must prominently display a hyperlink to that publication on its municipal website.
Online newspapers that receive legal notices are required to publish them within 24 hours of receipt. The cost to publish online notices may not exceed the rate established under N.J.S.A. 35:2-1.
