Job Description:

Perform a variety of manual and unskilled labor work. Must be able to work in tight and confined spaces while doing various repairs and maintenance.- Clean manholes, wet wells and pump stations. Possession of a valid New Jersey’s  license required. High school diploma or GED required.  Knowledge of electrical, carpentry, masonry, painting, plumbing and welding preferred. Waste water experience preferred. Must be able to lift 50 lbs and be on feet during his/her schedule work day.  Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions. 

Under the direction of the Superintendent and /or Foreman of the Utilities Division will perform all phases of maintenance and repairs of wastewater facilities, and storm water collection facilities.  Performs related duties as required.

Examples of Work

  • Performs various types of manual and skilled work. 

    Being able to work in tight and confined spaces while doing various repairs, and maintenance.

    All Aspects of pulling and cleaning debris out of wastewater pumps 

    Climbing vertical ladders at pump station, wet wells, and manholes from depth of three to forty feet continuously. 

    Free hanging off of tripods in wet wells or manholes performing general maintenance or repairs.

    Cleaning debris baskets. 

    Cleaning filters out the back of the debris tank of vactor truck. 

    Act as a responsible attendant be able to listen for the entrant at all times in case of an emergency and act accordingly.

    Cleans manholes, wet wells, and pump stations. Loads, lifts and moves supplies and equipment.

    Landscaping & cuts grass, hedges, waters lawns. 

    General maintenance and repairs of pump stations, sewer lines, emergency generators, buildings and grounds.

    May be required to hand dig due to underground utilities, and downed equipment. Concrete and asphalt work. 

    Know and operate light equipment and dump trucks. 

    Cleans municipal vehicles. 

    Assists in all Township emergency operations as directed such as plowing snow and any other deemed emergency.

    Ability to perform assigned duties without constant supervision. 

    May be required to stay late or be called in due to unforeseen emergencies.

     

Preferred Skills:

Qualifications

  • Possession of a valid New Jersey driver’s license is required. 

    High School diploma or the equivalent. 

    Knowledge of electrical, carpentry, masonry, painting, plumbing, and welding preferred. 

    Wastewater experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. 

    Ability to work independently and understand, remember and carry out oral and written directions.

    Must be able to work in confined spaces around wastewater. 

    Ability to see that proper procedures are followed and to see that reasonable standards of workmanship are maintained. 

    Ability to see the proper safety precautions are taken by the crew at work and that procedures are taken to protect the public from injury during all activities.

    Ability to keep records when needed.

    Ability to be able take control of an emergency situation and recover some one if needed with a tripod and winch.

    Ability to work with a tripod to control the Entrant and listen to orders of the entrant.

    Must be able to wear an SCBA.
